Love this articles. I recentley moved country and found that joining the local football team meant I instantly had a group of friends that liked slimier stuff to me. They were all more then happy to show me the town and answer any questions i had. Thanks for sharing this article! I'm sure it will help lots of people.

There is no substitution for learning a countries language. It shows you're ready to embrace the culture and really helps break down barriers. That's obviously easier in some countries then others! I moved to Spain 3 years ago with my wife and after an initial period where we were ready to pack our bags and go home! we are not (almost!) fluent and could not be happier.
